Con i suoi 2758m di altitudine, una pendenza media del 7,6% e una massima del 14%, il passo dello Stelvio è stato teatro fin dal 1953 di tappe che hanno segnato il Giro d’Italia (9, di cui 3 con arrivo in vetta). Epiche alcune edizioni come quella del 1965 dove i ciclisti sotto un’improvvisa nevicata riuscirono a scalare il lato valtellinese grazie a centinaia di spalatori e quella del 1972 con Galdos e Fuente che si diedero battaglia fino alla cima. Il Passo dello Stelvio è anche teatro ogni anno di 2 suggestive scalate: il Mapei day-Re Stelvio a Luglio e la Cima Coppi a Settembre.

Il Gavia, nonostante un’altitudine assoluta solo di poco inferiore e una pendenza massima del 18%, in virtù del dislivello inferiore è meno impervio dello Stelvio. Ciò non di meno anche sul Gavia sono state scritte pagine esaltanti della Corsa Rosa. Memorabile l’edizione del 1988 sotto la neve con Van der Velde che scollinò per primo ma fu costretto a fermarsi per evitare l’assideramento. Anche il Passo del Gavia è teatro ogni anno di una scalata nel periodo di luglio chiamata Gara ciclistica Passo Gavia.

Anche se inserito nel Giro per la prima volta solo nel 1990, il terzo passo che fa vibrare chiunque segua il ciclismo è il Mortirolo (passo  che in precedenza non esisteva in quanto era una semplice mulattiera). Lo scollinamento è a “soli” 1852m ma con una pendenza massima del 18% e con lunghi tratti con pendenza costante dell’11% che non concedono tregua.  Indimenticabile la cavalcata di Marco Pantani nel 1994 che lo consegnò alla storia (sulla vetta è posto un monumento alla memoria del grande corridore romagnolo).

Nella zona di Bormio esistono anche altri passi in cui in tempi differenti il Giro d’Italia e altre competizioni minori hanno fatto tappa: il passo del Foscagno che collega Bormio a Livigno e i passi del Bernina e della Forcola che da Bormio attraverso Tirano conducono sempre a Livigno attraverso la Svizzera.
